Six Practices to Overcome Fear and Put Yourself Out There

To grow your business and reach new customers, you know you need to put yourself out there, network proactively, and share content on social media. But if you’re not a natural extrovert and you lack experience, the idea of “reaching out” can seem difficult or even impossible.

Here’s a simple idea that can help you find a way over this obstacle:

Somebody out there really needs you. Someone wants to access your product or service as much as you want to provide it. When you make yourself accessible on social media, you’re reaching out to that person and you’re giving them what they need!

By refusing or resisting to putting yourself out there, you are in fact taking away that chance from people who you need you to find you!

To put yourself out there, take “yourself” out of the equation!

Here are the 6 practices to overcome your fear of putting yourself out there:

1. Picture one person who really needs what you have to offer.

Think about one person: the person who’s looking for you just as hard as you’re looking for them. What are they like? What do they want? Envision them in your mind and imagine how happy they’ll be when they find out how you can solve their problem or resolve their issue.

2. Remind yourself “why” you do what you do.

Do you remember why you started your business in the first place? Do you remember how excited you were when you first came up with your original idea? Channel that feeling and hold onto it! Think about the big impact you want to make through your business.

3. Create your “mantra” and turn it into a routine.

Every time you feel resistance, or you hesitate to reach out to someone or post something on social media out of fear or doubt, recite a mantra that will give you strength and keep you moving forward. Choose a short saying that will remind you how you’re helping others and why you do what you do.

4. Start first, perfect later!

Let’s say that you are not very comfortable sharing your content because you think it is not good enough: just get started and perfect it later. If you wait to post until your content is perfect, you’ll wait forever. Just post as is! If you spot things you don’t like, edit them when you see them or just make note of them and apply your lessons to future posts.

5. Focus on systems and habits rather than emotions.

Focus on your work system. Develop a set of steps and follow those steps every single time. If you find yourself hesitating because of feelings like fear or self-doubt, just trust your system to carry you through.

6. Don’t try to please everyone!

If you try too hard to please everyone, you won’t please anyone; most important, you’ll displease yourself by standing in your own way. As the saying goes, “You do You – Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.” If you feel like your post is ready to publish, but you imagine one person out there in the world who won’t like what they see, just set that vision aside and keep moving.

“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.”

When you post boldly and share from the heart, you present your product to the widest possible audience, and you’re more likely to reach those who need your product or service the most. Sharing isn’t selfish! It’s actually generous and helpful, since you’re offering something that might change another person’s life. Actively reach out to people, network, share your posts, blogs, newsletters, and product information, and you’ll be helping others while you help yourself by growing your business!
